Soap

For our midterm I choose the create something out of a bar of Ivory soap instead of the Spam. Initially i was thinking of creating some sort of tiki statue, Nike symbol or a Jordan jump man. In the end up creating a crunch bar out of the soap. I cut the soap in two piece in order to make it long enough then carved into it the word crunch but on one half i bite into it to resemble as if some had started eating it. Let me tell you soap taste nasty but anything for art right.

Spray Can

Street art dates back hundreds of years it is looked at as hideous, but i seem to really enjoy it. it is my favorite type of art. it very colorful and artistic. I think you have to be very talented to be able to create something from a can of paint. It has more expression that are depicted in the technique then other forms of art.I wish there were somewhere that you could go that could teach you graffiti just like any other art taught in school this is an important technique in the world of art. To this day graffiti is looked at as a crime in society not art. But that needs to and will CHANGE. It will be part of HISTORY!!

Bomb It !

One evening i was flipping through the channels and came across this. Bomb It is a documentary about one of the most controversial forms of art from all over the world. Graffiti.I talks about the origin of graffiti dating back to prehistoric caves up to the 80's when it took New York by storm. Many great artist go unknown because their art is not signed because its seen as a crime. It is said to be a beautiful crime.

It shows people in action "Bombing It". Graffiti is looked at as a crime of vandalism but in reality its art. Why does art need to be on paper, canvas or in museum. The city walls are just as great. they are empty canvas waiting for someone to express themselves. Its a different language.

In the early 80's it was seen as a crime to political warfare in South Africa, then in the early 90's these graffiti artists started doing there names. It stared as a way to express there want of Mandel being freed. If caught it was a political crime and you would be detained without trail or a hearing.

The Graffiti has influences today's in the world of advertising. Today's billboard evolved from graffiti. The only difference is that billboards are legal. This documentary contains a lot of info and a point of view from the artistes I extremely recommend any artist to watch this.

GRAFFITI is a way of LIFE!!

Book Art cont.

So with the failed attempt to create my own story of the hidden messages in Disney movies I decided to hit the bookstore,  Barnes and Noble. As i walked in i came across this amazing book.At first my idea was to cu t each edge of the page to resemble the shape of the guitar and gradually make each page smaller then the one before to resemble the next example.

After consideration i created a collection of my favorite guitar rockers and called it Legends of Rock. They are guitar Heros'. it is in according fold with two different views. The first half you see the name of the artist then the picture, then the opposite on the opposite side. I ended calling this Guitar Hero Legends of Rock.

Molotov Man

Who is Molotov Man?

He is Pablo Arauz aka "Bareta" a family man identifying him self as a Sandinsta. His picture was original taken by Famous photographer Susan Meiselas in Nicaragua on July 16, 1979 during the opposition of the Somoza regime which began in the early sixties. He is shown throwing a  bomb at the Somoza national guard. it was a very important day for them because  they ended up winning and gained control  and power for another decade. This image initatlly represented  that great day in history for them but then years later the context was changed. Like the image of Che Guevara it started appearing every where on everything as a universal image of a revolution. It was as well taken out of context by painter Joy Garnett.
She did a project on riot painting en showing people in extremis. She looked for photoraphes that would work for her and didn't care about the context or who it belonged to. this Riot series gave Molotov man a new context because indeed this image has nothing to do with a riot. it resemble a revolution.

Book Art

Initially my thought was to take a Disney book and cut into it to create my own story from the images.Layer images though out  the book as in this example to the left. Disney has been putting subliminal messages for long time and if you haven't noticed, they have little hidden messages in their movies. I guess they have to create ways to entertain the parents to, right.

For example: The word “SEX” appeared in dust after Simba flops down on the grass on the edge of the cliff, when thinking about his father.
Then the Little Mermaid cover has something out of the ordinary the middle tower look like a penis.
